Periodicals, articles, clippings, printed endorsements, correspondence, and family papers relating to career of Richard Carroll; file of periodicals and clippings includes Carroll's obituary, 2 Nov. 1929, a 4-page newspaper section from "Palmetto Leader"; clippings from "Southern Indicator" (Columbia, S.C.) 25 Oct. 1919 and 10 July 1920; letters to the editor from Carroll and articles about Carroll from "The State" and other S.C. newspapers, including his criticism of black urban migration and his account of incident illustrating Senator Wade Hampton's concern for welfare of black citizens. Also including "Souvenir and Official Program of the Bishops' Council of the African Methodist Episcopal Church," 14-18 Feb. 1923, containing biographical sketches and photographs of Carroll and other black leaders including the Rev. Charles Jaggers; Sept. 1910 issue of "Home Field," magazine of the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board, containing "Uncle Joe's Defence of the Senator," an apology for Senator Benjamin R. Tillman's racial attitudes based on an interview with Tillman's black employee Joe Gibson. Printed and typewritten endorsements of Carroll by white South Carolinians including letter, 2 Dec. 1908, on "State" newspaper stationery addressed to "members of the brotherhood of man" by William E. Gonzales; 1905 pamphlet "Endorsed by the Most Prominent Citizens of South Carolina," containing support for Carroll's Industrial Home for Boys and Girls by Governor D.C. Heyward and others; and articles and correspondence by Baptist clergyman and writer Victor I. Masters. Letter, 3 April 1905, from Carroll to John C. Sheppard, pointing out that Sheppard's refusal to strike Carroll for offering him $100 in lobbying money "was a good lesson for other white men that they should not take advantage of a Negro"; documents relating to Carroll's participation in a 1915 Baptist revival in Dallas, TX, including his evaluations of various white Baptist clergymen. Family material includes funeral notices and estate papers of Carroll's widow Corrie Julia Carroll, his daughter Mary Crozer Taylor, and his son Seymour Carroll, and biographical sketch, 1977, by his nephew Dr. Roy L. Hill of Tuskegee, AL, and photocopies of family photographs; also including historical sketch of Richard Carroll High School in Bamberg, S.C.
